I made an eight-legged friend, but I didn't watch him carefully enough.
I hadn't been trying to make a friend. I hadn't known I would be approached by anyone. But there he was, this curious young creature.

I'd been sitting alone when he came to me. It was a sweet, friendly spider, come to explore the table at which I sat. He had come to make a friend. Many would not have accepted friendship from a being like him, but I saw kindness in him. I knew we could get along, and we bonded easily.
While our friendship had only just begun, it was soon lost. As rapidly as my attention had turned away, he disappeared. It seemed that our friendship was not as strong as I had believed. My spider had left, and I'd hardly has a chance to introduce him to my boyfriend. I tried to forget about him and take a sip of my Mountain Dew.
"Stop! Don't drink that!" These words give me pause, and then my boyfriend continues, saying, "I found your spider."
There he was. He hadn't left after all. He'd made a terrible mistake instead. The poor thing was nearly drowned within a cup of Mountain Dew, kept afloat by a cube of ice.
Though I fished him out and did my best to save his life and though he fought strong and hard to stay with us, managing strength enough to limp along, water trailing behind him, it was too late. My little spider died. Mountain Dew ended the life of a great adventurer. He will be missed.
